Sexual bullying

Sexual bullying is bullying based on your gender or sexuality. There are lots of different ways to sexually bully:

  • Talking about sexuality as an insult (e.g. saying ‘gay’ to mean something’s rubbish)
  • Making jokes or threats about things like rape
  • Putting someone down using sexual words (e.g. ‘slut’)
  • Touching someone somewhere they don’t want to be touched
  • Touching someone in a way that makes them uncomfortable
  • Gossiping about someone’s sex life (wherever you do it: talking with your friends, on the back of a toilet door, facebook...)
  • Forcing someone to act in a sexual manner

'Bullying – Don’t Suffer in Silence' report also defines bullying as:

  • Pornographic material, graffiti with sexual content
  • Sexual innuendos and propositions
  • Looks and comments about appearance, attractiveness, emerging puberty
  • In its most extreme form, sexual assault and rape
